Late in 2010 the peer-reviewed Journal of Obesity published a meta-analysis of studies testing the garcinia as a weight loss aid. Of the 23 trials they identified, 12 were methodologically sound enough to include in their analysis. The analysis revealed that some statistically significant weight loss occurred, but the magnitude of the effect is small and the clinical relevance is uncertain. They also found that gastrointestinal adverse events were twice as likely in the hydroxycitric acid group as in the placebo group.
Dogs are also used in many other areas of biomedical research, including heart research, surgery, dental health and studies of hereditary diseases, in addition to research on the health, nutrition and behavior of dogs themselves.
Dogs and Dog Housing, a publication of the Animal Welfare Information Center, is a good summary of some of the current thinking about the housing and social needs of dogs as is Comfortable Quarters for Dogs in Research Institutions. Most of the dogs used in research are beagles due to their convenient size and docile nature.
Why Study Dog Cognition Other than humans, dogs are easily the most successful large mammal on the planet. From the Arctic Circle to the deepest jungles of the Amazon, dogs have traveled with humans for thousands of years, and the role of dogs in society has continued to grow. Dog research at the Max Planck Institute is strictly observational. There is no invasive research of any kind. We give the dogs various tasks to solve and observe how they interact with their environment, other dogs or a human.
Our Research At the Center for Canine Cognition at Yale, we’re interested in how dogs think. Our studies explore what dogs know about the physical and social world. Our Breed Research tool is the right place to start – and finish – your pet-picking journey! You adore kitties, but violently sneeze each time you pet a cat? Find out which breeds are considered hypoallergenic and suitable for people with allergies.
