Looking for Alibrandi Essay Sample

This year her life is turned upside down when her father comes into her life for the first time, her close friend commits suicide, family secrets come out, she forms a relationship with Jacob Coote plus Josie has to figure out her own identity.

At school Josie feels like she is the odd one out, being ethnic, plus all the other students come from wealthy backgrounds. All her life Josie has felt like an outsider.

Josie was also not accepted in the Australian community, as she had no father and was only half Australian. A major theme in Looking For Alibrandi is identity. Josie has a change in perspective on her own identity. Initially, Josie believed that her appearance and ethnic background were the determining factors in her social acceptance. She also believes that because she is at a wealthy school on a scholarship and has no father, she is looked down upon.

An example is when Josie was told by a teacher Sister Louise that she was actually voted school captain but was given the role of vice captain because they felt she lacked the leadership skills and that her and her friends are in fact trend setters within the school and looked upon with envy, Josie has a sudden change in perspective on herself. She has always lacked self esteem and was very conscious of what others thought of her, but now has realized she is actually one of the most popular girls in the school which is a great confidence boost for her.

John Barton and Josie were similar in many ways. They were both well educated and wanted to get somewhere in life. They were close and could talk all day. Although they had similar aspirations they came from completely two different backgrounds. Josie has many problems in the novel but believes no one else could have any of their own problems. When he died Josie realized life is important and her troubles are small and can be easily resolved with friends and family around.

His life was set out for him by his Dad. The only way he really felt free was to die so no one could control him. A big part of who Josie is, is her ethnic background. There is one particular event which really makes her think about her culture. She realizes that others have it much worse than her. At first Josie thought that her background stopped her from being herself but later realizes that her culture makes up who she is and that she cant break free of it.

Jacob Coote and Josie are opposites who form an unusual bond in the novel. They go to different schools and have different values. Josie wants to be a barrister and Jacob wants to be a mechanic. Josie is hampered by her ethnic background and Jacob has difficulty understanding this.

Before Josie even met her father, Michael Andretti, she resented him. It is not until after his death that she realises her real feelings for Jacob. Indeed, without these influences, Josie heightened understanding of herself and others would never have occurred.

In reflecting on these experiences and understanding, how do these transformations impact her life? Look for examples of tradition in the family and school. In the novel, Looking for Alibrandi, Melinda Marchetta explores how Josie is initially embarrassed about being Italian but throughout the text she becomes proud of her Italian heritage. How does Michael Andretti appear to be adapting to his role as a father? Josie initially resents her father but comes to love and respect Michael and accept him in her life.

Josie rejects Michael at first, but then starts to warm to him. Home Papers Looking for Alibrandi.
