Welcome to Reddit,

Make a shell of packing peanuts around the egg, surround shell with balloons, attach a parachute to back end of the structure. I think i'll end up using styrofoam somehow. No parachutes, no messy liquids. I think the way to go here is to create the largest spherical shell possible out of a rigid rubber foam, and suspend the egg in the center of it using springs. I would still create a thin cushion around the egg. At this point, I'm thinking of suspending it within a styrofoam cube, in order to maximize the surface area so it falls slowly.

Eggs can take a lot of force length-wise, so I think it's important to have it land on a set side. How will you be suspending it? You want to dissipate the impact forces. Think impact zones in cars. How about a paper cube filled with popcorn or packaging peanuts, and the egg suspended with rubber bands to prevent it from falling out of the popcorn, to the edge of the cube?

I used two styrofoam cups, and a bunch of ear plugs I got for free. Mine worked; half of the class's didn't. I had space between the two cups with a layer of earplugs in it and a weight to make sure it lands on that side. It took most of the shock: What about getting a balloon with a large "neck" and a helium tank. Put the egg inside the balloon, and fill it with helium so that it goes DOWN but very slowly Instead of floating into space. How do I plug these numbers into an equation and what equation to calculate the impact?

If you could, I would appreciate it if it was working out with the variable w for weight. Are you sure you want to delete this answer? Easiest way to get the weight, is to take everything apart and weigh it individually on a postal scale they're more accurate than anything else , the tub, the lid, the nylons, the egg, everything you're using needs to be weight, then add all those weights together and you'll have the true weight of the entire contraption.

It's a great idea and sounds like it will work, but you've opened yourself up to some serious physics, not just impact, but momentum, inertia, force of impact, and buoyancy, and ALL of those have different rules and laws that govern reactions. I would first figure out the true force of the impact, not including the fact that it's suspended inside the container, once you know the force of the impact, you can then state your reasons why your idea will work, since the egg being suspended that negates the force of the impact to the egg itself because the egg is in constant movement where the container and everything else is not.

Basically you made a fragile seat belt for the egg, so that the seatbelt itself won't break the egg and you negate inertia and momentum because the egg is suspended. My instructor used a parachute and that labored nicely yet you cant use it so i ought to in basic terms think of of a pillow.
