I tried to move my body but it refused to obey me. I tried to talk but my mouth would not obey me. Blood just kept gurgling out. I stared down at my legs and looked at all the people rushing towards me as if I had suddenly turned into a gold bar and they were all scrambling to pick me up. I admired the sunlight for a while and was rather intrigued by how different it looked from this angle. It seemed almost as if it was a rope from which one could use to climb and reach the sun.
My eyelids grew heavy and I closed my eyes, drifting off into a beautiful dream in which I was to be in for the next two months, or just eight weeks, as I would have preferred to say it. When I finally opened my eyes, all the pain just hit me at once. My body felt like it was being pulled apart from four different directions and my head throbbed mercilessly.
I felt as if my tiny, pathetic brain was being squeezed out through a fruit juicer. I was also breathing through a tube which I suspect was the same type as those found in hardware shops. The appearance was practically uncanny. Then after the doctor had examined me, one by one, a group of complete strangers started streaming into the ward.
Their expressions looked as if they had just witnessed a miracle. Some of their eyes looked terribly weary. One woman in her fourties looked as if she had been deprived of sleep for weeks. Then, that same group of people started to crowd around me. The woman with bloodshot eyes in particular, hugged me until I felt as if I was going to suffocate. It reminded me of an incident when I was about five years old and a large python near my house had almost strangled me to death.
Everything that happened after that was like a whirlwind and happened in a flash. The doctor proclaimed that I was well enough to go home and then motioned for the group of people to head into his office. I personally think that they looked like a group of zombies walking around. There are two main arguments based on judgement against those whom are advocates of using hope to help treat severe illnesses. The first of which is that if physicians have too much hope, they may aggressively treat the patient.
The physician will hold on to a small shred of hope that the patient may get better. Thus, this causes them to try methods that are costly and may have many side effects. One physician noted that she regretted having hope for her patient; it resulted in her patient suffering through three more years of pain that the patient would not have endured if the physician had realized recovery was infeasible.
The second argument is the division between hope and wishing. Those that are hopeful are actively trying to investigate the best path of action while taking into consideration the obstacles. Research has shown though that many of those who have "hope" are wishfully thinking and passively going through the motions, as if they are in denial about their actual circumstances.
Being in denial and having too much hope may negatively impact both the patient and the physician. Also always have hope.
